English: Halloween and Tomb Sweeping Day is very dissimilar. Our Halloween originates from Scotland. The Scottish celebrate "Samhain"; every year, the Scottish dress up to scare away evil spirits. In America, young children, adolescents, and adults "Trick-or-Treat" on October 31 every year.
"Trick-or-Treating": Young adolescents, children, and adults every year October 31 will go out wearing their costumes to trick-or-treat. They go up to random houses and knock on the door. When the door opens, they chant, "TRICK-OR-TREAT!". The owners of the house will then give them candy. Trick-or-treaters don't have to go on October 31; they can also go on October 30.
Costume: You can wear practically anything for Halloween: ghost costume, doctor costume, superman costume, animal costume, watermelon costume, etc... Small children usually wear cute outfits; teenagers usually wear scary outfits; female adults usually wear sexy outfits; and male adults usually wear comic or business-like costumes.
Haunted House: American people like to hang up decorations on their front door. Some people even decorate their whole houses; these are true haunted houses. The front door will usually have a Jack O' Lantern and black spider and spider webs would hang from the rooftop down to the front door.
Scary Movies: Hollywood filmed several horror movies that usually are showing on Halloween. Many people watch scary movies with their friends until around 3 in the morning. Some go to the movie theater to watch scary movies.
Parties! Teenagers really like going to parties. Night parties usually have tasty foods such as spider-shaped cookies and chocolate cakes, etc...
English: Ghost month is during the seventh month of the lunar year. During the ghost month, the spirits of ancestors come up from the grave. People usually burn incense, prepare a lot of food for the spirits, and go to Chinese operas. Ghost month is very similar to Tomb Sweeping Day.
Tomb Sweeping Day is in early April. Legend tells that during the day April 5 or so, spirits will come home, a little like American Halloween. Therefore, on this day, living people will tend to go to the graveyards to worship their ancestors. Now, this Tomb Sweeping Day is usually celebrated with a whole family traveling and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the spring season.
There are no costumes unlike American Halloween.
Everyone is at the graveyard. Tomb Sweeping Day is unlike the American Halloween in that it is not as chaotic and "fun"! Chinese people prefer the silent tranquil nature of the holiday and they do not spend so much time partying outside.
